Dr. Firestone’s research emphasizes the design, synthesis and characterization of hierarchical, self-assembled, soft materials that can exploit the native capabilities of biological molecules to store and transduce energy. The core research carried out under this effort involves the synthesis of amphiphilic monomers and macromers which self-organize into a variety of structured mesophases.  The mesophases are then “captured” as durable, robust nanostructured polymers that can be used as functional scaffolding for electronic and photonic connections between biomolecules (proteins) and inorganic materials.
