Densification of foam pads
This example shows the visualization of the elastic and structural properties of a compressed foam pad simulation by Dr. Scott Bardenhagen (LANL). The red color indicates regions of high elastic stress superimposed onto the compressed micro-structure at moderate level of compression, roughly 10%. Additional simulations of the time evolution of the compression demonstrated that larger bubbles collapse first compared to smaller, structurally more stable ones. The visualization of the simulation provided insight into the physics of foam densification and addressed the debate between competing models over how foam collapses. Therefore these simulations may facilitate the improvement of engineering models for foams [S.C. Bardenhagen et al., J. Mech. Phys. Solids 53 (2005) 597, A.D. Brydon et al., J. Mech. Phys.
